Natural, relaxed wedding photography at the Merchant Adventurers Hall, York

I’ve had the pleasure of capturing the special moments at weddings of all shapes and sizes, including weddings at the Merchant Adventurers Hall. It’s such a beautiful setting for a truly unique celebration.

My approach to wedding photography is centred on working discreetly to capture authentic moments while allowing your day to unfold naturally. I’m not invisible, but my presence is unremarkable, blending in to ensure you and your guests feel at ease. What Couples Say About Working With Me at the Merchant Adventurers Hall

“Ian, thank you so very much for the pictures. We’ve gone through them a zillion times now and we don’t get tired of them! They are so beautiful! We really do love how amazing they turned out and we are very pleased with all the hard work you put into the whole day. Looking at them just feels like we can live all those small, casual yet so special moments once again… I don’t really think there is anything I would change about them, they came out just perfect.”

– Claudia & Phillip

“Ian has very beautifully captured every emotion and moment of our special day.

We loved the fact that he was unobtrusive and very much formed part of our guest list and connected to the essence of a small and intimate family ceremony.”

– Louisa & Tom

“All we can say is wow! You have caught the moments we didn’t see, there is so much joy and love in the images and we can’t thank you enough for that.

You have captured our family and friends so well. Every picture is a memory to treasure.”

Your Questions About Weddings at the Merchant Adventurers Hall, Answered

How well do you know the hall?

I’ve had the pleasure of working at the Hall quite a lot over my career. It’s such a great space, and the Company are fantastic to work with too. I keep thinking I’ve worked out where all the creaky floorboards are, but I always find a new one!

Some parts of the hall can be quite dark, is that a problem?

Not at all – I’m very comfortable in working in low light situations and I love the character and charm that the hall delivers. I generally work with the available light sources in the space, and my cameras do a better job of seeing in the dark than I do, but I’ll occasionally introduce some additional light as discretely as I can if it’s absolutely necessary. It’s important for me to balance capturing quality imagery with working discretely and without distracting from the occasion.

What do you do if there’s bad weather?

The weather is obviously something we can’t control, so it’s reassuring to know that there’s good options available if we’re not able to take couples portraits and group photographs outside. Both the Great Hall and the Undercroft offer some great spots for portraits, as well as the various corridors and other smaller rooms.
